Acne, it’s a small word but a big problem for many. Dealing with acne-prone skin is both frustrating and disappointing because sometimes it seems like no matter what you do nothing improves. Personally, I struggled with problem skin for years and it’s only over the last few months that I’ve managed to get it under control. Before I start I just want to point out, I’m no expert, these are just some skincare tips that have helped me clear up my skin.
Here are a few lessons I’ve learned over the years from my own research, professionals or just family and friends that have stuck with me and really made a difference in my skincare routine.
Be Consistent
Consistency, it may be obvious to some of you but it is definitely something I’ve had to work on. Products work best when you use them consistently, so nail down your skincare routine and stick to it, over time you will begin to see results.
Be Patient
Being patient is easier said than done, but unfortunately, miracles don’t happen overnight. Give products a few weeks before you write them off, like I said it’s taken me months to finally see results.
Invest In Good Products
For years, I would try every drugstore product there was and it wasn’t until my GP told me that it’s truly worth investing in higher-end skincare specific brands. Don’t get me wrong I still don’t spend a huge amount compared to some people, but spending closer to $50 on a moisturizer compared to $10 has definitely made a difference.
Don’t Touch
Touching and picking at your skin is probably the worst thing for it. Not only can touching and picking your face spread bacteria and make things worse but it can also leave you with terrible acne scars, so please, don’t touch your face!
Drink Plenty of Water
You should aim to drink two liters of water a day anyway, but ensuring you’re well hydrated can do wonders for your skin. I was the worst for not drinking enough water, but over the last few months I’ve drunk at least two liters a day and it definitely leaves your skin super hydrated. That along with starting my day off with warm lemon water is definitely helping keep my skin clear.
Seek Professional Advice and Get To Know Your Skin
I know it’s hard to seek professional advice and talk about acne-prone skin because a lot of the time it’s a very sensitive subject, but trust me it really does help. For years I thought I had “oily skin,” but it wasn’t until I saw a professional that informed me I actually have “dry skin.” My skin only appeared “oily” because it was constantly trying to hydrate itself because I wasn’t giving it the hydration it needed. So seek professional advice and get to know your skin, it truly does make a difference!
Cleanse Gently
This is one lesson I wish I knew from the very beginning; people with acne-prone skin should avoid exfoliating scrubs and rotating brushes. It seems like deep cleansing would be a great thing for problem skin but in fact, it can end up making your skin worse. Every morning and night I use a gentle cleanser and just massage it into the skin gently. However, I do use a GENTLE scrub once a week, followed by a facemask just to keep my skin soft and glowing. The main thing to remember is the skin on your face is delicate, so treat it that way.
Avoid Over-Drying and Moisturize
Many products and treatments targeted for acne-prone skin can end up stripping your skin completely, especially if they contain alcohol. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to avoid most of these products completely, opting for a gentle acne wipe instead. Also, always moisturize after cleansing, if your skin is dry your potentially triggering extra oil production and that’s definitely something we don’t want. For extra hydration overnight I apply coconut oil directly to my face and allow it to sink in as I sleep. Before you freak out at the thought of applying oil directly to your face hear me out, coconut oil is full of medium chain fatty acids, like lauric acid and caprylic acid, which when metabolized turn into antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agents in the body. These same antibacterial and antifungal properties in coconut oil that work wonders in your body do the exact same on your skin also.
Less Is More
For many years, I was using way too many products, which I later found out can actually make your skin worse. Keeping your skincare regime simple but with good, effective products is far better for acne.
Choose Your Makeup Wisely
When you have problem skin it’s totally normal to reach for foundation and concealer but unfortunately, that may be part of the problem. Looking back on it now, I was wearing way too much makeup for many years, inevitably adding to the problems my skin already had. Some of the best advice I received was to make the switch to mineral-based cosmetics, not only are they lighter on your skin but most products are formulated without silicones, parabens, and fragrances.
Having acne-prone skin can be really disheartening but try not to let it get the better of you. I know it’s easier said then done but try not to dwell on it, a lot of the time other people don’t even notice. Be sure to share any skincare tips of your own!
